Three hours south through the desert to Ramses II's cliff-cut temples — the single most impressive thing the pharaohs ever built, and they moved it uphill in the 1960s.
Abu Simbel is 280 km from Aswan and there is nothing in between. The drive is long and dull; the arrival is not. Four twenty-metre Ramses colossi cut into a cliff face, and beside them the smaller temple to Nefertari.
The whole complex was cut into blocks and lifted 65 metres up the cliff to escape Lake Nasser. Your guide will show you the seams if you ask.

Comfortable closed shoes and light layers. Sites are dusty and often unshaded, so bring a hat and sunscreen. For mosques and churches, shoulders and knees should be covered, and women should carry a scarf for their hair.
