A long day north to two of the best-preserved temples in Egypt — Dendera's painted ceiling and the Abydos king list — with almost no other tourists.
This is a serious drive, roughly three hours each way, and it is worth every minute. Dendera's astronomical ceiling has been cleaned back to its original colour, and Abydos holds a carved list of seventy-six pharaohs that is one of the foundations of Egyptian chronology.

Comfortable closed shoes and light layers. Sites are dusty and often unshaded, so bring a hat and sunscreen. For mosques and churches, shoulders and knees should be covered, and women should carry a scarf for their hair.
